Games like Prison Architect have explored managing large scale communities in a similar way. Like The Sims, your colonists have needs and moods that must be managed (or not, if you’re feeling cruel). Like Terraria or Minecraft, the landscape is a square grid that you can exploit for resources and incorporate into your buildings. On the surface, you’d be forgiven for finding Rimworld a familiar game. This is Rimworld, an immensely popular colony simulator released in 2018.
Only your direction can help them survive. Within are three colonists and some meager supplies, here to thrive or die as best they can on an uncharted planet. Suddenly, there’s a roaring sound, and three shiny metal pods descend from the sky and gently touch down. Apart from a few animals and maybe a bit of wind, there’s nobody around in this pristine patch of wilderness. Maybe it’s a desert, or a boreal forest, or even a swamp.
