In that comic, I think one of Robotnik's robots said that the dimension couldn't maintain itself because the chaos emeralds in it were removed by Sonic and Knuckles so they could turn into their super forms. That dimension was actually destroyed because there was no chaos emerald in it. It was also stated they were going at incaluable speeds and they energy was so powerful it ripped the very fabric of space and time and there energy was off the charts.
